A harmonic reducer is a special gearhead designed for high precision and compactness. It is especially suited to precision motion control and high-torque transmission, and particularly to space-constrained applications that still demand high performance. Thanks to advanced gear design, maxon harmonic reducers offer not only high efficiency but also good back-drivability, flexibly adapting to a wide range of high-precision requirements. Typical application fields include:
Robotics
Aerospace
Medical
Optical systems
The operating principle of a harmonic reducer is based on the elastic deformation and flexibility of a flexspline. At its core is an elliptical shaft called the wave generator.
This shaft pulls the flexspline and deforms it. The flexspline is a thin, cup-shaped elastic metal part mounted inside a fixed outer ring (the circular spline). The radial motion produced as the flexspline deforms is converted into rotational motion.
